patriots delivering healthy outcomes

We are healers, helpers, Veterans and

for policy and people every day.

On Your Side Action is a service-minded organization committed to building a healthier, sustainable future. We understand that achieving optimal health for many individuals remains out of reach not only because of barriers to healthcare, but also unmet needs in every day life for basics like housing, transportation, and access to healthy foods. We understand that the so-called social determinants of health should really be called political determinants of health given many are so heavily influenced by public policy and political forces.

This is where On Your Side Action comes in—we don’t just accept the status quo. We do not accept that barriers to health should be the norm in this country. We fundamentally believe that “government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” And we understand that while “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” are among our unalienable rights; none of the 3 can easily be achieved without our health. This is why we view our work to build a healthier, sustainable future as a fundamental American ideal and inspiration. With that founding ideal in mind, we take on fights to do what’s right to build a healthier future: advancing healthy equity, improving Veterans care, and fostering healthier, safer environments. We tackle issues on behalf of all the regular hardworking Americans who are too often excluded and marginalized in political advocacy.

We are on the side of those who cannot afford fancy lobbyists for their causes. We willingly take on the big money special interests who are jeopardizing our healthcare and destroying our environment. And as Veterans and patriots, we will never rest until this nation honors our sacred obligation to care for those who bravely served. We will not stop defending our Veterans until our government does not just work for the wealthy war profiteers and defense contractors; but also for the active duty, our Vets, and their families who sacrifice so much. It is long past time that we consider the care of Veterans a cost of war. It is similarly long past overdue that we own this nation’s legacy and complicity in poisoning Vets and their families without accepting responsibility to cover the often deadly healthcare conditions that result from these toxic exposures. If you believe in the American ideal and building a healthier, sustainable future; we ask you to join us on OUR side and take action today!

Dr. Kyle Horton is a leader in the complicated arena of healthcare delivery and on issues and inequities impacting public health. She is an internal medicine physician who earned an MBA as part of a dual degree physician leadership development program. She brought her commitment to improving Veterans care, health equity, and fighting for healthier, safer environments to her candidacy for the US House of Representatives in 2018. Her campaign earned national attention with her live appearance on MSNBC’s The Beat with Ari Melber.

Dr. Kyle was raised in a family with a long history of service in the United States Armed Forces, and she has carried this spirit of service on by caring for Veterans with the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, including working in a post-deployment clinic for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans. There she trained the next generation of VA physicians to address the physical and mental health needs of our returning heroes. She earned the VA’s Silver Award for quality and commitment to patient-centered care for her Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT).

Dr. Kyle has years of experience working with the Veteran community and in advocacy, especially in the area of mental health. She worked alongside Veterans advocacy groups on Capitol Hill for passage of the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act. She has since championed changes and quality of care improvements to address opiate safety, military sexual trauma, women Veteran suicide prevention, and Veterans’ burn pit exposures.

Armed with the belief that quality healthcare should be a right of all persons, Dr. Kyle stood with American families by leading opposition to the ACA repeal and championing Medicaid expansion in her home state of North Carolina. A rally she emceed was even recognized by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show for its poignant message and demonstration of political courage. She’s served as a planner and speaker at community healthcare summits, including a Behavioral Health and Faith Summit, which was recognized for innovation by leaders in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Kyle stepped to the fore of the fight against offshore drilling after the death of a family loved one in the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. She has led meetings at the White House where she delivered over 2 million comments opposing offshore drilling to Administration officials. She has also led on issues related to environmental justice as someone who graduated high school in Flint, MI and having witnessed the devastation of her family’s farm in Appalachia from strip mining. She served on the Board of Clean Cape Fear, which is a grassroots community advocacy group addressing water pollution with PFAS and emerging contaminants like Gen X. She recently joined the Boards of Young Scientist Academy and the YWCA Lower Cape Fear.
